The discovery of Oil in Nigeria was received with great enthusiasm because it was then hoped that the exploration of the resources would stimulate both Economic and Social Development in the Region where the Oil was located.
Over the years, the exploration of Oil has been without the corresponding development of Oil and Gas Producing Areas hence, the now seeming unending Niger Delta Crisis. The dimension of criminality added to the Niger Delta agitations/calls for concerted efforts at tackling the Socio – Economic problems of the Region for the good of the Nation.
However, with the establishment of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) which metamorphosed into the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), a new chapter in the development of Oil Producing Areas opened. Unlike the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission(OMPADEC), NDDC has a wider Coverage and Scope.
In Edo State, the impact of the use of 13% Oil Derivation Fund due to the State was not really felt in the Oil Producing Communities until the inauguration of Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOGPADEC).
